Some really entertaining reading here:

According to domain registry NetNames, Volkswagen, Ralph Lauren and Nestle have all laid claim for polo.eu.

While all three submitted their applications within five minutes of each other, Volkswagen was first and has secured the domain while Ralph Lauren - which owns polo.com, was second and missed out by just three minutes and 24 seconds.

With three weeks to go before registrations for the new .eu domain name opens to the general public NetNames said some brands have been very nervous about securing their European online presence while others have been “very confident”.

While Skype made 16 applications, using a number of registrars, fellow online brand Google has put in just a single application, such is its confidence in securing the google.eu address.

Meanwhile, PriceWaterHouseCoopers, which has been appointed by the European domain name registry as its validation agent, failed to submit its own documentation before the requisite deadline and has now been forced to make a second application.
